What is a Nursing Assistant?

You have a gift for helping people and you believe you can make a difference. Why not put those skills to work in a new career in healthcare? Your training as a Certified Nursing Assistant will include extensive study in class with experienced RNs and LPNs and actual clinical training in a premier nursing long-term care facility in Atlanta.

A Certified Nursing Assistant, or CNA, is a person who assists patients or clients with healthcare needs under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN) or a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN). Also known as a Nursing Assistant (NA).  The nursing assistant provides basic needs for patients of any age, ethnicity or gender as they work under supervision.

CNAs give patients important social and emotional support and also provide vital information on patient conditions to nurses, doctors, and other medical staff. Since aides have extensive daily contact with each patient, they are the key to providing vital information on the patients' conditions to the nurse and doctor. Most CNAs agree that it is one of the most rewarding challenges that a person in the healthcare industry can undertake.

Successful completion of training at Covenant CNA School will prepare you to take the Georgia State Certification Exam that will be conducted by the Nurse Aide Competency Evaluation Services (NACES).

CNA Q& A

  •  What should I do if I lose my certification card? You can request a replacement certification card by printing a Certification Card Request Form to mail to the registry via the Georgia Web portal ( www.mmis.georgia.gov), click on the Nurse Aide Tab or calling the telephone Interactive Voice Response System at (678) 527-3010 (local) or (800) 414-1044.
  •  Do Certified Nursing Assistants have to receive in-service education? Certified Nurse Aides working in a licensed Medicaid/Medicare facility must attend at least 12 hours of  in-service education offered by the facility. Each facility is required to submit  in-service information to the Nurse Aide Program, including names of CNA employees attending those in-services.
  •  My certification has expired. Can I renew it? Certified nursing aides must renew their certification every two years. You can renew during this period by submitting a completed renewal application which verifies that you provide eight (8) hours of nursing related services for pay under the supervision of a nurse during the two-year span in which your certification was active.  If lapsed under three years without work verification, then you must retake and pass the State written/oral and skills competency examination to update your certification. If lapsed over three years, then you must complete another State approved nurse aide training program and pass the State written/oral and skills competency examination.

What Makes A Highly Effective Certified Nursing Assistant?

6 Habits of Highly Effective Certified Nursing Assistants

 1) Certified Nursing Assistants are proactive. Proactive CNA’s use their resourcefulness and initiative to find solutions rather than just reporting problems and waiting for other people to solve them.

 2) Certified Nursing Assistants have a personal mission statement. This is based upon personal morals and values- and it is almost always used as a stepping stone to make choices and decisions.

3)
Certified Nursing Assistants knows how to balance their time between residents/patients
. The CNA can set priorities based upon a resident's medical needs vs. non-medical wants. She recognizes when a needy resident truly requires some TLC and when something else is going on.

 4) Certified Nursing Assistants are not  interested in being in CONTROL. The CNA seeks a win/win relationship with her residents, but realizes this isn’t always possible. She will go out of her way to allow the resident to maintain control with as many choices as possible. The resident’s dignity and individuality is always respected.

5) Certified Nursing Assistants listens to their residents, and uses effective communication skills to make sure she understands what is being said. The CNA knows sometimes a resident doesn’t understand her, so she goes out of her way to make sure she is understood.

 6) Certified Nursing Assistants work WITH the resident to overcome conflicts and misunderstandings. Instead of being defensive, the CNA will admit to her faults in the problem, and will seek to improve and correct these issues.
