Quality Standards of Excellence with an
ALUMNI COMMENTS
Why I Love My Job: Marcia Mottley, RN
Job: Registered Nurse/ Program Coordinator at Covenant CNA School, Atlanta Ga.
What I do: “I instruct individuals from 17 thru 72 years of age on how to become a certified nursing assistant.”
How I got into this: “I came to Georgia in 2003 from New York City and... I started looking for a job in The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. I found an ad that was looking for a licensed practical nurse to teach certified nursing assistants. I could not work as a registered nurse, but I was an LPN for 7 years, working in long-term care facilities before I became an RN.
“I was also a nursing assistant for five years... and as a result of my background, I felt qualified for the job in the paper. I was hired at Covenant CNA School... [and] I fell in love with teaching CNAs and continued to teach, as well as work in health care facilities as a registered nurse.”
Best part of the job: “As an instructor, you have the ability to transform lives. People come into your classroom with the expectation of receiving knowledge from you, knowledge which they do not have at the time, but with determination, hard work and team effort, you can make a difference.”
Most challenging part: “There is a difference in age groups and ethnicity in the four-week classes at Covenant CNA School. The ethnicity difference has never been an issue, because we learn from each other. However, the age difference is sometimes challenging... The challenge is to sometimes slow down the younger individuals physically but speed up their minds academically and vice versa for my more-mature individuals.”
What people don’t know about my job: “My job is not just a job to help pay my bills, but it is a mission. I have always planned to go overseas to do missionary work as a nurse, however, after teaching at Covenant CNA School, I have come to realize that I do not need to leave our country to help those that are less fortunate than myself. Right here in America, there are so many people who need help.
“I can watch someone who is homeless, but has a desire to change their life, go from living in the street to obtaining employment in four weeks. I can allow my life experience as a single parent on public assistance — who was one step from being homeless — guide and empower others who start the program to successfully finish.”
What keeps me going: “I have a career that keeps me awake every night thinking about how I can make a difference in someone else’s life when the sun comes up. What I do in the classroom allows me to see the product of my hard work and dedication at the end of every four-week program, when a new set of students graduate and successfully become [CNAs.]”
Preparation needed: “A program coordinator must be a registered nurse with at least one year of long-term care experience. You have to create a lesson plan and submit it to the Georgia Medical Care Foundation for approval. Once your program has been approved, you have to maintain standards each year on your annual evaluation by the state.”
Subject: Covenant C.N.A. School Advance Clinical
During the week of January 31st to February 4th 2011, I attended a clinical for PCT students at Great Hospital. I worked on the floor in unit 31 on all five days. In addition, on February 3rd, I worked at Employee Health, taking vital signs and drawing blood. My overall experience has been an exceptionally positive one. I enjoyed every minute of my clinical experience and am very grateful for the opportunity that was given to me. The nursing staff was absolutely wonderful.
Every nurse tech and every nurse that I encountered was extremely helpful. They answered all my questions, sometimes more than once, helped me get familiarized with the equipment and the patient care procedures, taught me how to chart using the computer and showed me the location of supplies. They all exhibited positive attitudes toward me and made me feel welcome on the floor.
During
the five days on the floor I took vital signs, measured intake and
output, turned patients, performed blood glucose tests, made beds,
supplied patients with ice and helped them with toileting, charted vital
signs and transported discharged patients downstairs. I also had the
opportunity to perform an ECG on a patient. It was an amazing experience
to be able to apply what we had learned in the classroom and during our
previous clinical experience at the nursing home to the hospital
setting.
I also spend one hour in the telemetry booth on the floor above. That, as well, was a great experience as love interpreting rhythm strips. My special thanks should go out to Keith, who patiently explained everything to me, answered all my questions and let me interpret some strips. My morning at Employee Health went smoothly and it was a great experience to draw blood on real patients. I am very thankful that Employee Health opened their doors to us and I highly value the experience I gained during my time there. I am a pre-nursing student and it was great to be able to observe the nurses on the floor. I cannot stress enough how wonderful the nursing staff on floor 31 has been. The positive attitudes of the nurses and nurse techs definitely contributed to making this clinical such an incredible experience. I enjoyed working the floor, learning how to use the equipment and taking care of the patients.
This clinical experience has given me insights into the hospital environment that cannot be learned in the classroom. What I am walking away with is a thorough understanding of the importance of reporting anything abnormal immediately, the importance of being accurate when charting and performing quality control checks and the importance of documenting everything. A single oversight can cost a life.
Thank you, for this amazing opportunity! Silken Audient
I am Fire Sleek who was a student of Covenant C.N.A. School. I
successfully passed CNA State Examination and PCT National Examination. I
attend Covenant CNA School Advance Patient Care Technician Clinical at a
great hospital.
This is my clinical practice report:
The 1st day of clinical practice with
Covenant C.N.A. School instructor Mrs. Mottley introduced a team consist
of three C.N.A. students with to the unit attending duty medical
staffs. I am one of the members of the C.N.A. student team. As the
practice started one of the unit nurses ask me to collect soiled towels
and soiled linen in plastic bags from the patient rooms. Before I enter
to the room I knock on the door and asked the will of the patient to
allow me to enter. In the room where I am assigned to work, the patients
allowed me to enter. I foam my hands with sanitizer whenever I go in
and come out from each room. While entering the room I told my name who I
am and why I am there. I asked them that I am there to collect soiled
towels and soiled linens "Is that ok?" They said it is ok. I collected
the soiled linens and soiled towels in different bags. I tied the
plastic bags in the room and I dispose the soiled item in the designated
room. Before I leave the room I thank the patient. I hang new plastic
bags in rest room. On the same day I had chance to take patients
temperature, pulse, respiratory rate, blood pressure and arterial oxygen
concentration of two patients. I grasped the automatic vital sign
machine and took the vital signs of the patients. I documented the vital
signs of the patients on a paper and informed to the nurse who ordered
me and to my instructor. I put the paper into the shredder. I learned
how to document the vital sign of the patient in the computer. We were
taken to telemetry room on the fourth floor and introduced with the
staffs working there and got the chance to see the machines. At 2100 the
assigned time was over and left the hospital.
The2nd day of clinical practice: Tuesday February 1st at 1600 Mrs. Mottley introduced the team with the duty medical staffs. I was told to take vital signs of four patients. I grasp the automatic vital sign machine and knock on the door of the room. All the patients said come in. I foam my hands with sanitizer when I went in and came out from each room. I told them who I am and why I am there, saying that I am here take your vital sign. I asked them "Is that ok?" all of them said ok. I took the vital signs, document on paper and inform to the nurse and to my instructor after that I put the paper into the shredder. I collected soiled towels and soiled linens from rooms and disposed into the room where soiled stuff gets disposed.
I put new plastic bags in the restrooms. I saw how blood glucose is
measured with accu-chek on one patient and I got the chance to test the
blood glucose of two patients and successfully did it. I informed the
measurement to the nurse. I delivered bags of ices to the patients
poured into their jugs and cups.
The 3rd day of clinical practice: Wednesday February 2nd at 0730 I went
to Employee Health Service. I was there alone (not a team). I introduced
myself to Mrs. Deborah F. that I was there to practice phlebotomy and
she said ok. I got a chance to draw blood on one employee. I introduced
myself to the employee and Mrs. Deborah told to the employee who I am. I
took the blood pressure of the employee with manual apparatus, counted
the pulse and the respiration. She also checked and confirmed and
registered. The same procedure was done on another appointed employee.
One of the employees had blood tests so I got the chance to draw blood.
Before taking blood I sanitized my hands and wore gloves I felt median
vein at the brachial region. I cleaned the skin over the vein with
alcohol swap and allow the alcohol to dry. I applied tourniquet above
the brachial region and stuck a butterfly needle. I did the tourniquet
and collected blood in four tubes as needed and turned the tubes 8 times
up and down gently. 1130 was the time to leave the department, so she
reminds me to leave and I thanked her and left.
The 4th day of clinical practice: Thursday February 3rd 2011 at 1700
Mrs. Mottley introduced our team with the unit 31 duty staffs. One of
the nurses took me to assist her in measuring fluid draining from
different tubes. Before I went in to the room I sanitized my hands with
foam. I knocked the door and I told my name and why I am there. I asked
his will. He said ok. I got the chance to see and measure fluids coming
through tubes jp1 and jp2. I wore gloves, poured the fluid into
measuring cups. I told her and she documented the amount. When I left
the room I cleaned my hand with sanitizer. I got another order to take
vital signs of two patients. I grasped the automatic vital sign
machines. I knocked to the room door to allow me to enter into the room.
The patients said "come in". While I went into the room I told my name
and I said "I am here to take your vital sign is that ok?” I took the
vital sign of the patient and informed to the nurse who ordered me to
take it. Another order came from a nurse saying, "If you don’t mind will
you pour the urine of a patient".
In that room the patient was discharged. I foam my hands with sanitizer
and wore gloves. I poured the urine. I rinse the urinal and dried it. I
got order from the same nurse to check blood sugar level of two
patients. I went to the patients as usual I knocked the door asked
permission of the patients to allow me to come in. They said come in; I
cleaned my hands with sanitizer and wore gloves. I scanned my name tag
and the patient’s name tag. I cleaned the patient’s finger with alcohol
swap, dried with cotton ball and milked the finger and then prinked the
cleaned area of the finger. I followed the instruction on the accu-chek
machine.
As a droplet of blood came out, I contact the "c" shaped side of the
stripe with the blood and (allow) wait the hourglass picture to appear
and disappear. I informed the result to the nurse .At 2100 it is time to
leave the unit 31 and we left.
The 5th day of clinical practice: Friday February 4th 2011 at 1700 Mrs.
Mottley took us to the unit 31 and introduced us to the duty staffs of
the unit 31. I got the order to deliver bags of ice to the patients. I
prepared eleven bags of ices and delivered to patients. Whenever I
reached to the doors, I knocked on the doors and waited for their
responses. When they say come in I went in. I pour the ices into their
jugs and cups. I applied sanitizer whenever I went in and came out. At
2000 I got the chance to take vital signs of four patients and to
document their vital sign information into the computer. I grasp the
automatic vital sign machine and took the four patients temperature,
pulse, respiratory rate, blood pressure and arterial oxygen
concentration. At this time I myself documented the patients vital sign
information into the computer chart. I grasped a lot of clinical
practice knowledge in the hospital practice. I am so happy to get the
chance of such clinical practice exposure.
I would like to thank Covenant C.N.A. School and the Hospital and the Employee Health Service staffs.
Sincerely Sleek
I was afforded the opportunity to complete my Patient Care Technician
(PCT) clinical rotation with Covenant C.N.A. School Advance Patient Care
Technician Clinical at an amazing hospital at two locations. That week
has by far been the most memorable hands-on clinical experience I have
ever experienced. It was especially a pleasure working with the hospital
staffs that were very helpful through their advice and suggestions.
Most importantly, they were willing to extended their workplace and
years of knowledge to me.
Again I greatly appreciate the opportunity I was given by your
facilities. I was able to experience firsthand how working at your
company can be a rewarding experience. The experience was wonderful and I
look forward to another similar experience in the near future possibly
even as an actual employee.
Thanks again for such a great opportunity.
Sincerely, Katrina Adrien
The experience I with Covenant C.N.A. School Advance Nursing
Assistant Clinical Program was beneficial and enjoyable. The hospital
staff was welcoming and helpful. I enjoyed the interaction with the
patients and their families. The nurse techs, the PCAs, and the RNs
were all helpful and interactive. They trusted us with the bed baths,
vital signs, and ACCU-CHEK. They were open to us being there and
treated us as if we were one of their co-workers. Some of the things
that would have heighten my experience there would have been better
communication with the staff and more nurse techs. For few of the days
we were there, each nurse tech had 12-13 patients who all required bed
baths and vital signs. Also, I would have liked the doctors to be more
approachable. I enjoyed the experience and learned a lot.

My name is Keisha Beadle, a former student of the Covenant C.N.A School. First and most of all I would like to thank Ms. Mottley, for her hard work and effort. My experience at with Covenant C.N.A. School Advance Nursing Assistant Clinical in the hospital environment was a wonderful success. Over the course of my training I have noticed the outstanding care staff provided to patients and family members. I have learned and had hands-on with vital signs, communicating with patients, practice good sanitary, accurate documentation of medical record, the importance of protecting patient privacy, followed standard precautions, and respected patient rights. I have enjoyed working in the setting of a hospital, and felt very comfortable and have a strong desire to obtain an opportunity where I can utilize my skills.
Again, I want to thank everyone at the hospital and my instructor for the giving me a wonderful opportunity to acquire the knowledge to become successful in my line of work.
Sincerely, Keisha Beadle-Douglas
I would like to start off by thanking you for giving us the
opportunity to even step foot into a wonderfully hospital. Covenant
C.N.A. School Advance Nursing Assistant Clinical definitely gave me an
insight of not only what I would be getting myself into at a CNA level,
but also higher. The staff on Unit 11 welcomed us with open arms and was
more than happy to have us shadow them, and work alongside with them.
Any questions we had, it was answered by educating us further than just
the question itself. I saw what kind of difference I can make with
patients and how my interaction with them can make all the difference. I
enjoyed the Advance Nursing Assistant Clinical at the hospital
the experience that left a footprint on my career that I know I want to
be in. The skills we were taught and actually reading in the book at the
school house was brought to real life on the floor at Emory.
Again, my week at Covenant CNA School Advance Nursing Assistant
Clinical created a lifelong memory that I know it helped me for the
future. It was a wonderful experience that helped me. I saw the
different tempo compared to a lifelong care and even a different floor
on a hospital. Thank you for giving us the great opportunity.

MAGNELLY SAYERS
My name is Shanessa Battle and I am a student with Covenant CNA school. I
was blessed with the opportunity to attend their Advance Nursing
Assistant Clinical in a GREAT hospital. The experiences I had there I
will always remember. The chance to meet new and experienced people in
my field, to find how everything is properly done in a hospital setting
with caring compassion and in a professional manner. From the Nurse's
station to being able to properly perform as a CNA and also participated
in patient transport.
The staff was very nice and always helpful. There was no question I had
that did not get answered. One day when I have completed my classes and
am properly certified the hospital where we participated at would be one
of my first choices to apply for a permanent position.
I wish to thank my instructor and the hospital staff for making this such a wonderful learning experience.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Shanessa Battle
The Covenant C.N.A. School Advance Nursing Assistant Clinical training
experience was very knowledgeable, rich and rewarding. I will never
forget my opportunity with the “real-world” experience of healthcare.
The hospital staff was much diversified and family oriented. The nursing
staff is very helpful and understanding towards fellow classmates and
me.
The basic knowledge of patient care that has been received from Covenant C.N.A School was intensified from my externship with hospital. The excellent “hands-on” training helped with my weak points and strengthens them at the same time. I am confident that with the combination of my training and experience, these skills, which are backed by an excellent work ethic and strong character, I will prove to be an asset to the hospital healthcare facilities.
With the medical care that I had the
opportunity to learn, I can see I will have the potential to grow in my
choice in the medical profession as an employee with the hospital. It
has been inspiring and unique experience that I will always cherish. I
definitely would recommend this program to future nursing assistant
students to experience Covenant C.N.A. School Advance Nursing Assistant
Clinical.
Thank you,
Ms. Camille Johnson
Dear Mrs.Mottley,
My experience at Covenant C.N.A. School Advance Nursing Assistant
Clinical has been a valuable learning platform that I'm certain will
help propel my career as a Certified Nursing Assistant. Learning in a
classroom setting is essential for a strong knowledge foundation, but
it’s the hands on practical and clinical experience that truly fosters
learning, growth and a mastery of this craft. I am truly grateful and
privileged to have has this opportunity,
With Sincere Gratitude,

The experience I had at Covenant CNA School Advance Nursing
Assistant Clinical was great. I got to assist the nursing tech all this
week. I learned so much at the Advance Nursing Assistant Clinical. My
nurse tech was so nice, sometimes she allowed us do to half the work. We
took the patient's blood sugar, vital signs, gave them bed baths and
made their beds.

Great Learning Environment I
wanted to first say that this school is the best thing that has happened
to me in a long time. I truly feel blessed to be a part of the training
led by Mrs. Mottley and Mrs. Green. There're truly are no words that
can describe how much gratitude I have for Covenant CNA School. They
give you a unique real world experience that is not offered at many
schools. This is my second CNA school that I have attended and there is
no comparison. Thanks so much!

Highly Recommend
Covenant CNA school is top notch! The instructors are awesome and
the Program Coordinator (Mrs. Mottley) is off the chain. She is honest,
caring, determined and strives for continuous success daily. After
completing her program there is no reason why you will not be
successful. It's like CNA boot camp. You will learn real-world knowledge
from a highly experienced nurse, mother, Army Officer, friend, comedian
(yes, Mrs. Mottley is super funny!!), and much more. I have attended
many schools, University and training programs in my life and CCNA ranks
at the top. If you are looking for outstanding training at a great
price, look no further. I completed my CNA Aug 2, 2010 and will complete
PCT within a few weeks. Last but not least...Mr. Mottley and Ms.
Rosemarie are awesome.

Dear Mrs. Mottley
Covenant C.N.A. School an excellent training facility. I am very
satisfied with the educational learning that I have retained. I am
prepared to face my career with confidence, Profession and experience.
The instructor at Covenant also takes time with each student to make
sure they are prepared. Teaches with visual and prepared me with
listening skills. Ms. Mottley is one of the instructors that gave me
hands on training. That teaches focus and helping me with my weak
points.
I know now that Covenant C.N.A. school was the best choice. I have
recommended to friends and family to attend this profession. As a
student Nurse assistant, I am very proud of myself. I definitely would

Covenant CNA School is an excellent school with a very knowledgeable
instructor. Ms.Mottley always kept things honest, real, and straight
with us. She never sugar-coated things, and prepared us with the skills
we needed and many more. The class was fast paced, but she never left
anyone behind. She takes pride in her name and would never send someone
out in the field if they weren't prepared. I loved every minute of the
class. She interacted with us and never just left us there with the
text. I would recommend this school to anyone.

I graduated from Covenant and the experience was great. Mottley was great, very discipline and if you didn’t gain any knowledge from the course it is simply because you didn’t put forth the necessary time and extra energy it takes to be successful. I didn’t go to the school for appearance I went for knowledge.
